The South African “Proteas” cricket team is presently ranked first in the world in both the 50-overs and the 5-day format.

The South African “Springbok” rugby team is presently the holder of the world “Webb Ellis” trophy and is on target to win the current Tri-Nations championship.

Our South African athletes returned recently from the world championships with two golds and one silver.

What a pity that certain rabid black racists, (we all know who they are), turned what should have been a triumphant homecoming into a political rally.

I am not a great gardener. It seems to me that there is too much work needed to grow some roses.

I do however give lots of attention to my fruit trees.

Each year I prune the fig tree, the pear tree, the avocado tree, the loquat tree, the lemon tree, the orange tree and the plum tree.

And, each year, just about now, I marvel at how, from bare leafless trees, life starts again.

And, each year, I feast on the fruits.

Absolutely marvelous.

I am now 70-years old and have become acutely aware of how my mailing list is getting shorter.

We are all mortals so it is only a matter of when.

I still feel happy and enthusiastic.

I am still fairly physically active.

I still do crossword puzzles and sudokus.

So, I think, (hope),  that I am towards the back of the queue.

South Africa and Australia have both won the Rugby World Championships twice.

No other country has ever won it.

Today we meet in a Tri-Nations match at Newlands.

Fasten your seat belts.
