When I played school’boy rugby, many years ago, the rules were simple.

Physically subdue the opponents, run and score tries.

Now there are so many technical laws that often, when the whistle blows, I don’t know what the infringement was. I wonder how many of the players on the field know ?

These new laws are intended to promote more ‘running’ and less ‘mauling’.

In practise, they just cause more whistle-blowing and game stoppages.

They also give the referee too much influence on the eventual outcome of a match.
